首張成像巨型黑洞在震撼照片中持續演化

在2019年首次公佈黑洞影像的重大突破之後,事件視界望遠鏡(EHT)團隊針對超大質量黑洞M87*有了全新的發現。他們最新的研究不僅驗證了最初的解讀,更凸顯了黑洞的動態特性。這項由滑鐵盧大學研究人員主導的合作計畫,彰顯了全球努力與尖端科技在揭開宇宙最神秘現象面紗時的完美結合。

自2019年捕捉到世界上首張黑洞影像以來,EHT團隊便不斷突破探索的界限。2024年,這個由超過400名研究人員組成的全球合作團隊,公佈了超大質量黑洞M87*的新影像,讓人們得以更清晰地窺探其結構。這些細膩的影像,是將2021年世界各地望遠鏡收集到的資料整合而成。

最近,EHT團隊根據2018年對M87*的觀測以及2024年的研究成果,發表了一篇追蹤研究。這篇名為《M87超大質量黑洞的持久陰影》的論文,發表於《天文學與天體物理學》期刊,並呈現了M87*的更多影像。該研究雖未揭示全新的資訊,但具有關鍵意義——它證實了研究人員最初對黑洞結構的解讀是正確的。也就是說,他們一開始對M87*所見之物以及對資料的解讀都是準確的。

滑鐵盧大學教授兼周界理論物理研究所研究副教授艾弗裡・布羅德里克(Avery Broderick)表示:「我們開始看到了變化,這正是我們所預期的。」M87*的事件視界直徑約為一光日,因此其吸積盤應該會在短短幾天的時間尺度上展現出新的樣貌。「所有的模擬模型都讓我們對它的變化程度有了一定的概念,而這是一個重要的驗證。這篇論文旨在探討這些影像在我們最優秀的數值模擬背景下的意義。」

布羅德里克指出,滑鐵盧大學對EHT的貢獻廣泛且重大。他說:「沒有其他機構的貢獻比我們更大。2018年的許多分析工作,是由臺灣中央研究院天文及天文物理研究所(ASIAA)的同事主導的。有趣的是,去年1月和此次發表論文的主要作者,都曾以學生或博士後研究員的身份在滑鐵盧大學學習工作。我們不僅在滑鐵盧大學為這個專案付出了大量努力,還在培養EHT的下一代領導者。」

當滑鐵盧大學的研究人員在揭開黑洞神秘面紗的道路上領先一步時,1月22日發布的分析成果展現了全球人才、技術與努力的合作,彰顯了集體力量下所達成的卓越創新。《M87超大質量黑洞的持久陰影》這項研究已發表於《天文學與天體物理學》期刊。
